North African Imperialism
North African countries have gone through a lot to gain their deserved independence. European powers came in to colonize the region and take advantage of their resources. They brought with them missionaries. Many Europeans felt as though it was their responsibility to civilize other people in the world. European powers would gain control of villages through trickery and would not follow the rules. The most famous sad tale about Africa is about its slavery. Millions of slaves were taken from the region to work for the white people.
The colonialism started around the early 1800’s by France, Britain, Belgium, and other countries. Through their belief that they were inferior, they began taking over through bribery, persuasion and physical force. Many families were split apart. Although Africans resisted, the power of modern technology at that time took over and there was no other choice but then to listen. Some of the Arabian Slave had taken in part in North Africa. The Arabs had developed the stereotype that they were better than the "blacks". Many had suffered from that. After European powers had a grasp, they began working. they made some people work while sending children to missionaries. Algeria suffered many deaths from the France. They had killed about 1/3 of the people due to invasion. Many countries in the North were not strong. They had weak economies with a small militarily making it easy to take over.
Today, the colonial era of the region still shapes the way it works. It affects a nations, wealth, language, clothing, and most importantly the people. Most of the countries are third world countries that are still developing. Some countries that are progressing are Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya.
Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya are all countries that are trying to become developed countries. Here are some of the things they are doing or already did. Egypt has been protesting, and rioting to start a revolution. The people were not happy with the government but after the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt stepped in things quieted down. The Legal System of Law in Algeria consists of French and Muslim rules. The history of French rule mixed with Arab traders created a diverse legal system which tries to satisfy all citizens. Libya contains Africa's highest literacy rate, 89.2% of the population being able to read. In Tunisia, health care facilities are growing. Many communicable diseases are spreading. All these countries and others in North Africa are getting over their colonial rule. They are becoming more developed.
