Eastern Africa
European imperialism in East Africa has had lasting effects on the region and its inhabitants.
The Portuguese were the first to colonize eastern Africa. They started in southern Mozambique, and they made their way up to present day Kenya. They had a lot of coastline in their possession. Once Britain came in, they took over some of the area that is Kenya and Uganda now. They found this region perfect for growing cash crops such as coffee and tea, and they saw great capacity 'residential expansion'. The French came into Madagascar and the German took control of present day Rwanda, Burundi, and part of Tanzania.
The East Africans were subjected to the rule of Europeans. They could no longer make their own choices, but they were made for them. The Africans were no longer seen as mighty warriors, but as slaves in obeisance to the dominating British, French, and German. Many tribal chiefs were slain, exiled, or replaced. This created even more instability amongst the Africans. They were even hurt even more when Europeans created their colony boundaries without any regard to the existing tribes living there first.
The Africans had a huge set back because their system of government was messed up, and they were forced to work for Europeans.
